The process of inspection welding is that of evaluating the characteristics of a weld. This can relate to the weld size, as well as the presence of weld discontinuities. The size of a weld can be incredibly important, as it often relates directly to the weld’s ultimate performance and strength. An example is that of undersized welds being unable to withstand stresses applied during service.

Depending on their size and location, weld discontinuities, which are imperfections adjacent to or within the weld, can effectively prevent the weld fro meeting its intended performance. A weld discontinuity is often referred to as a weld defect, and can cause premature weld failure due to a reduction of strength or added stress concentrations within the welded component.
