Non-destructive testing (NDT) is incredibly necessary when it comes to aluminium welding. Every industry uses certain NDT methods for aluminium welding to ensure that there are no cracks or other defects that could cause major issues at a later stage. However, we don’t recommend using any NDT technique for aluminium welds, there are some that are just better than others. Here are a few of the best techniques used in NDT for aluminium welding:

Visual Inspection

The goal with all NDT tests used for aluminum welding is to ensure that the test can be conducted quickly and efficiently. Visual inspection can be a highly effective means of testing the weld for any surface defects, as long as it is being conducted by a professional using the correct tools

Radiography

The next test that we consider to be a great NDT technique for aluminum welding is radiography. Radiography allows you to check beneath the surface of the weld for a full view of any weld defects. This NDT technique uses high-end equipment that can only be operated by professionals wearing the necessary protective equipment.

Eddy current testing

Arguably one of the best techniques for detecting surface-level defects in aluminum welds in eddy current testing. This testing technique can quickly and easily determine if there are any flaws on the surface of the aluminum. However, eddy current testing needs to be paired with other testing methods to determine if there are any flaws deeper below the surface of the aluminum.
